LUNG CANCER SCREENING
At Lido Medical Practice, we are proud to offer the first ever private Lung Cancer Screening Service in Jersey.
Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK, with around 130 new patients diagnosed every day.
Currently, less than half of patients with lung cancer receive their diagnosis at an early stage. Following the introduction of screening programmes, 76% of lung cancers in those tested were diagnosed at an early stage. Patients diagnosed at the earliest stages are 20 times more likely to survive for five years compared to those whose cancer is detected later.
Please see the criteria below to check if you are eligible for lung cancer screening.

What are the risks?
No screening programme is perfect, and all have potential harms. There are four main areas of concern:
-
Overdiagnosis
-
Lung cancers may be found that would never have caused problems for the patient, potentially leading to unnecessary treatment.
-
-
False positive and false negative results
-
False positives can result in follow-up tests and surgeries, which carry risks. False negatives can occur, meaning a cancer may be missed.
-
-
Radiation exposure
-
Repeated low-dose CT scans involve a small amount of radiation, which carries a slight risk of causing cancer over time.
-
-
Incidental findings
-
Scans can sometimes identify unrelated issues in the chest that may require further tests to confirm whether they are harmful.
-
Because of these risks, lung cancer screening is reserved for those at high risk, who also have a life expectancy and general health that would allow them to benefit from treatment if required.
What happens if my scan reports an abnormality?
Not every abnormality found through screening will be cancer. In many cases, all that is required is a follow-up scan at a later date to assess for any changes.
Abnormal scans identified through our service will be referred to the Lung Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) at Jersey General Hospital, so that a specialist opinion can be provided regarding the next steps for investigation.
