What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a swelling in the aorta, the main artery in the abdomen that carries blood from the heart. It often causes no symptoms. Learn more about AAAs here.
Who is Most at Risk?
Men over 65 are at higher risk, with around 1 in 70 men in England in this age group affected.
Why is AAA Important to Diagnose?
A ruptured AAA is life-threatening. If detected early, management options are available:
-
Small aneurysms (<5.5 cm): Monitored with lifestyle advice, including managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and quitting smoking.
-
Larger aneurysms (>5.5 cm): May require surgical intervention to prevent rupture.
What Screening is Available in Jersey?
In the UK, the NHS offers ultrasound screening for men aged 65. This painless test uses an ultrasound probe to assess the aorta. Learn more about the NHS screening programme here.
In Jersey, there is no public screening programme, so screening must be arranged privately.
What Should You Do?
If you wish to consider screening, book a 15-minute consultation with our clinic. Registration is quick and can be completed online or by requesting a form at reception.
